A staggering amount of money is tossed around on Super Bowl bets each year. Nearly 23 million Americans will bet on Super Bowl 2019, for a total estimated at $6 billion in Super Bowl bets according to the American Gaming Association.
While the vast majority of Rams vs. Patriots Super Bowl wagers will be illegal, legal sports betting is spreading throughout the U.S. Legal sportsbooks have operated in Nevada for decades, but now they’re available in seven other states too. And more and more gamblers are choosing to bet on sports legally rather than take the risk of betting with a bookie or other illicit options.
What’s more, many people are placing legal sports bets now who never gambled on games in the past. In a new LendEdu.com survey, 60% of people who have bet legally on sports over the past half year say they had never previously made an illegal sports bet through a bookie or other means.

States With Legal Sports Betting
Is sports betting legal in your state? Well, there are many more legal sports betting options now compared to the last Super Bowl, with states like New Jersey, Delaware, and Mississippi adding sportsbooks since June 2018.
Still, there are the only eight states with legal sports betting for Super Bowl 2019:
Delaware
Three sportsbooks in the state will let you place legal bets on sports. They are located inside the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, the Harrington Raceway and Casino, and the Casino at Delaware Park.
Mississippi
The state has 28 casinos, and most have legal sportsbooks. You can make a Super Bowl bet legally in Mississippi at places like the Golden Nugget, Beau Rivage, and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, all in Biloxi.
Nevada
Betting on sports was first made legal in Nevada in 1949, and there are now nearly 200 sportsbooks running in Las Vegas casinos and elsewhere throughout the state.
New Jersey
There are New Jersey sports books located in the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park, and most Atlantic City casinos now have legal sports betting available.
New Mexico
There is one legal sports book in New Mexico, the Santa Ana Star, located in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe in Santa Ana Pueblo.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s first sportsbook opened in early December, at the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race, and now there are a half-dozen spots offering legal sports gambling in the state — including the South Philadelphia Turf Club and Harrah’s Philadelphia, both in the vicinity of the state’s biggest city.
Rhode Island
Two casinos in Rhode Island have legal sportsbooks, the Twin River Casino and the Tiverton Casino Hotel, which boast that they’re the “only places in New England to places your sports bets” (legally).
West Virginia
How to Bet on the Super Bowl Legally — Online
Assuming you are of legal age (21), you can bet on Super Bowl 2019 if you are physically inside any legal sportsbook while placing your wager. What about online sports betting?
For the time being, you can make legal sports bets online only in three states on Super Bowl Sunday 2019: Nevada, New Jersey, and West Virginia.
In all cases, to bet on sports online legally you’ll have to register with a licensed sportsbook or mobile app and provide proof that you are 21 or older. Also, you must be physically located within the state’s borders when you’re making your Super Bowl bet online.
